TechMela, India – Great 3 days

Lets come to the serious part of TechMela. Primarily my focus was on MEDC and I was there in the one room all 3 days – Mobile Platform.

First i would like to thank Microsoft India – overall the conference was too good from the technical point of view. I learnt a lot during the 3 days. Specifically the sessions on Windows Mobile 6.0 are too good.

I have to mention some of the international presenters….

1. Loke Uei Tan, Technical Product Manager Mobile and Embedded Devices Group – great person with lot of enthu in his sessions
2. Mel Sampat, Program Manager, Windows Mobile – Redmond, Microsoft Corporation – simple, yet clear presentations – really liked the way he presented

Other than these, Derek Snyder, Product Manager in the Mobile and Embedded Devices Group, Microsoft. did a great job with Windows Mobile 6.0 – top 10 features – professional one.

Also the Indian counterparts from Micorosoft IDC…superb. Their technical knowledge and the way in which they are trying to make the audience understand the new technology, concept is really good.

Sessions I attended…and impressed with are…

1. Aarthi Ramamurthy, Program Manager, Visual Studio for Devices, Microsoft Corporation
2. Manav Gaur, Program Manager, Visual Studio for Devices, Microsoft Corporation
3. Pandurang Nayak, Web Developer Evangelist, Developer & Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Corporation
4. Ravi Sankar, IT Pro Evangelist, Developer & Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Corporation
5. Srinivas Nadimpalli, Software Development Engineer, Visual Studio for Devices, Microsoft Corporation
6. Vineet Gupta, Developer Evangelist, Developer & Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Corporation
7. Vinod Kumar, IT Pro Evangelist, Developer & Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Corporation

Thanks to all these Indians who are making the Indian presence in Microsoft.

Things I have learnt during the conference – WM 6, Orcas, WM Analysis tools, SQL CE syncs.

Overall it is a must attend conference every year…may be preferred to have at Bangalore or Chennai :-)

Connected? Better Connected?? Come on Microsoft…

Better Connected is Microsoft’s new feature in VISTA and off late Microsoft is talking loud on BETTER CONNECTED applications and CONNECTED EXPERIENCES.

In the recently concluded TechMela, Mumbai – at Hotel Renaiassance, there was no Wi-Fi provided by Microsoft. But you can say, there should be Wi-Fi in a 5 Star Hotel….Yes, you are right…..Check out the price below.

For 24 Hrs. – Rs.899
For 1 hr. – Rs. 399 (for one hr.!!!)

Reminder: This conference is for developers !

Microsoft should have built a free Wi-Fi with good connectivity and bandwidth…

One of the basic thing in the connected world is E-Mail….I think Microsoft might have thought that will distract the developers from concentrating on the sessions !?

I am a blogger…and I thought I can blog from the conference and was planning for it. I think I should have asked microsoft for blogging while offline !!! may be a new feature in Windows Vista 10??!!

There may be few practical problems I understand…but Microsoft is not conducting the conference FREE OF COST!! All are paying….

Saying all this…I am not against Microsoft, I love their innovation, products, ease of use etc. But something really gone wrong in the planning of such an event.

Another big things I still couldn’t figure out is…why they have selected MUMBAI instead of Bangalore and Chennai….

I feel the crowd is less compared to last year is only due to this fact. For the final day key note, even a single room is not full – they had 3 rooms connected !

Mumbai – I feel not suitable to this kind of developer conferences. I think most developers from Chennai and Banglore missed this event due to the distance they had to travel.

The final day keynote on some “Products and Services” …by 4 people…with gavruv leading was a disaster….they were just killing the time as they had no plan on that session.

It was really sad…and looking not at all professional….and people were commenting a lot after this session….this could have totally avoided with a little bit of planning.

For the amount of money Microsoft is spending on these kind of conferences and spearkers is getting lost due to this kind of unplanned stuff.

These are all some of the NEGATIVE side of the story…I have lot more on the positive side too….on technical side, new trends etc. will post shortly.

Windows Vista – Experience Index : What’s my score?

The Windows® Experience Index is a new feature built into Windows Vista. It is designed to help consumers understand how well Windows Vista and the software running on it will perform on a specific PC. The index achieves this by assessing the performance of the PC and assigning a score to it. The higher the score, the better the PC will perform.

The overall PC performance is represented by the base score. The base score is derived from 5 sub-scores for each of the following 5 attributes:

·         Processor

calculations per second

·         Memory

operations per second

·         Graphics

desktop performance for Windows Aero graphics

·         Gaming graphics

3D graphics performance. Useful for gaming and 3D business applications

·         Primary hard disk

The data transfer rate of the primary hard disk

The Windows Experience Index is useful for the following:

1. When buying a new PC, it is useful for determining the quality of the Windows experience a buyer can expect from a particular PC.

2. When upgrading a PC, the index is useful for estimating the overall improvement a PC user can expect to get when replacing or adding a new hardware component.

3. When buying software, the software package may include the recommended Windows Experience Index base score a PC should have in order to run the particular software application well. If a PC has that score or a higher one, the software will run well on it.

The scale of the Windows Experience Index ranges from 1 to 5.9. The higher the score for a particular performance area, the better performance you can expect from that area.

To better understand the index, please read on http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2006/09/22/windows-experience-index-an-in-depth-look.aspx

I am using 2 machines – one at my office, a HP Desktop PC and another one is my Laptop at Home, Dell Latitude D820. I am running Vista in both the machines – look at the index ! – my productivity at home is more than that of in office !? :-)

In fact both these machines are not old – age may be 1 yr. – still see the index !!! imagine what could be the score for your old home computers! its a race between harware and software, but we are loosing out from our pocket for UPGRADES.

vista index

I would love to use a machine with 5.9, lets see when I get such an oppurtunity.
