Feeling helpless!

When the whole of India casting their votes, people like me sitting idle at home watching TV with a feeling of helplessness.

We CAN’T vote, due to the fact that we are still a migrated labours living in Chennai. Most of the fellow IT people situation across Chennai and Bangalore is the same. We are not in our home town where we have the registration and even have a Voter ID card.

Can we travel to our home town to vote? Tough, many reasons. I am not justifying though!

1. Too far away – for me it is more than 500+ kms
2. Summer vacation – already trains and buses are full: tough to get ticket
3. Mid of the week – for just one day, it is hard to travel and come back & resume work
4. At this time of recession & cost cut, we are not afford it for just one day etc.

We could’ve registered locally, but we had to cancel our home town registration which we don’t want to loose – that’s one of the key address proof. Also to get a Voter ID in Chennai, we need address proof and for many of us stay in rented houses and mansions, it is highly impossible.

I think we, IT or migrated work force is more than 30% (exact figure not sure) of Chennai population are not being allowed to vote even if we have a wish at our bottom of the heart.

Few questions to the government:

1. I can buy ticket for any train any station – in fact I can buy ticket from anywhere in the world
2. I can withdraw my money across India – any ATM
3. I can pay my mobile bill across anywhere in India
4. I can pay my EB bill online anywhere in the world
I can do many such things and the location doesn’t matter. Why not for VOTING?

I have Voter ID card and why not I walk into any poll centre and show my card and cast my vote? Is that too tough technically? I don’t think so.

Whether the politicians deliberately don’t want to do? Little clue I have.

Anyway as a citizen of this country, I have to say to my country
“sorry, I couldn’t do my duty today”.

Lack of human respect! India culture?

I was reading a wonderful post by my CEO about “Corporate Governance” and how the heads of Government offices and heads of states should be accountable.

She ends with saying, “As a nation lets make ourselves accountable to our actions everywhere – whether it is house, office or government. If this becomes our way of life, that will be the Golden period of modern India. I pray for this to happen soon.” – True!

Last 1 month, I (my wife and father too) was going thru’ such an amount of bad experiences in 3 different government offices. All they lack was any kind of basic kindness towards fellow human beings.

Starting with BSNL, my application for a simple connection and broadband was pending for more than 1 year and in between they had given WLL after 6 months. Even in the WLL there was a charge of Rs.250/- for Internet which I could never use for a single byte! Till now I am not sure whether that WLL had a connectivity at all. After going to PG (Public Grievances), nothing really moved. Finally I got the connection and BB (after 20days) last week. My father went to Keelkattalai exchange few times during the process and because of my complaints to the PG, the people in the BSNL office didn’t show any respect! (may be my expectation of good behaviour to a 60+ year, 30 year government school head master was wrong!)

Next with EB, for a name transfer. When I bought my new apartment, my builder missed EB connection name transfer for me alone in that 28 houses apartment. You can’t imagine the number of documents you had to submit for this process! After all these docs, EB was asking for a property tax proof. Since this is a new apartment, even the first assessment and payment is yet to happen. So I didn’t have that at all. Even this is applicable to all other 28 apartments also, not sure how they did the name transfer!? May be a wrong question!!! Now after my father’s frequent visits to EB office, finally they have accepted the application forms and I am waiting for the transfer to happen. Hoping sooner !

Now comes the GAS connection. Government relaxed the rule for applying for a new gas connection saying, there is no need for a ration card. An immigrant worker like me from south tamilnadu to chennai, this was a great news. I applied with Indane – Local dealer Prarthana @ moovarasempet immediately. I showed all proof that have asked for and paid Rs. 250 for inspection after I got the letter from them! After 20 days, when me and wife were away, a person from the agency came and checked the house. I was using a gas from my neighbour in the same apartment. Even though the rule may not permit, this is inevitable. What else you do? The person asked us to call and went away. After that, me and my wife went to the gas agency and the response was shocking, they didn’t even provided enough information and said it was cancelled. They didn’t even offered a seat to my wife considering she is 7month pregnant! They had asked us to come back next day. Today, me and my wife again went to the agency and the reply was, the person was on leave and they asked us to come back by Monday. Not sure what will be end!!! When government announce such a scheme considering people, these people are denying the rights of genuine people. I even showed my marriage certificate, so they can clearly understand how genuine our case is. I really get frustrated !

Couple of questions I am searching for answers,

  • In tamil they say, “Nenjil Iram”, “some little kindness” – why it is missing or reducing from people?
  • Respect to fellow human being? any such thing exists?
  • Customer care -?! may be a bad word here!!! too much expectations!?

I had visited few countries – like, Canada, Australia etc. where I could see high respect fellow human beings (at least to the people level). But here in India, we are hating the next person standing if we are in queue, hating the next person while on the road, hating the next person who come to us for help, hating the neighbours & fight with them for petty things!

I am wondering why & how the soo much talked great Tamil culture lost these basics.

I am answering myself saying, “if anything is available in plenty, it lacks value”. May be a basic sales & marketing statement – I am not an MBA! :)

Unfortunately in India, we have plenty of PEOPLE, so the people and their lives are not valued.

Let us show LOVE to the next person we meet !

BSNL – never changed!

I have been a customer of

  • ICICI Bank for the past 6 years – both Savings account and a Credit card
  • Airtel – mobile phone – 4 years
  • TATA Indicom Broadband – 2 years (not now – had to close due to home shift)

But I have been never to these offices except very few times in all these years. ICICI, I might have been to the bank 5 or less occasions, Airtel – may be couple of times, TATA – never!

We are in a e-age where we can get all works done by either phone or web. Even a money transfer to some other bank, I can do online. Any service requests like activating a service, I can just call Airtel customer care.

Even Tamilnadu government has changed – we can pay electricity bill ONLINE. I am not saying I am lazy ad want to do all from home :). Waste of time and effort if we go to their respective offices – both for us and for them too!

Now come to BSNL, I am following up with BSNL for a bill clarification. My major story about BSNL is here – still unresolved – he he.

They gave a WLL and never told about any Internet thru’ WLL. Now I got a bill saying rs.250 for an UNLIMITED (he he) CDMA Internet. Salt to the wound! ha?

I have contacted (no:1500) customer care and at least spoke a dozen people for clarification and how to connect WLL. America is easy to find surely, finding a solution with BSNL – no way!!!

After 10 to 15 days, too many people asked me to go to the Keelkattalai BSNL exchange, but how can I go with all pre-occupied works with office etc. And whether BSNL works by 24/7 to go whenever I find time after office hours?? The only option is I have to a leave and go!!! Sit there in the exchange for the whole day and find a solution!!! is it a customer care?

COME ON BSNL -  CARE FOR YOUR CUSTOMER PLEASE!?

India should send the BSNL people for relay races – definitely they will bring the GOLD in Olympics. One number to the other – the relay going on and on and on. I have called too many accounts officers and customer care (ha ha – he he) officers.

ICC for Australia! – Immediate rule change announcements

(1) Ricky Ponting – (THE TRULY GENUINE CRICKETER OF THE CRICKET ERA AND WHOSE INTEGRITY SHOULD NOT BE DOUBTED) should be considered as the FOURTH UMPIRE. As per the new rules, FOURTH UMPIRE decision is final and will over ride any decisions taken by any other umpires. ON-FIELD umpires can seek the assistance of RICKY PONTING even if he is not on the field. This rule is to be made, so that every team should understand the importance of the FOURTH UMPIRE.

(2) While AUSTRALIAN TEAM is bowling, If the ball flies anywhere close to the AUSTRALIAN FIELDER(WITHIN 5 metre distance), the batsman is to be considered OUT irrelevant of whether the catch was taken cleanly or grassed. Any decision for further clarification should be seeked from the FOURTH UMPIRE. This is made to ensure that the cricket is played with SPORTIVE SPIRIT by all the teams.

(3) While BATTING, AUSTRALIAN players will wait for the ON-FIELD UMPIRE decisions only (even if the catch goes to the FIFTH SLIP as the ball might not have touched the bat). Each AUSTRALIAN batsman has to be out FOUR TIMES (minimum) before he can return to the pavilion. In case of THE CRICKETER WITH INTEGRITY, this can be higher.

(4) UMPIRES should consider a huge bonus if an AUSTRALIAN player scores a century. Any wrong decisions can be ignored as they will be paid huge bonus and will receive the backing of the AUSTRALIAN team and board.

(5) All AUSTRALIAN players are eligible to keep commenting about all players on the field and the OPPONENT TEAM should never comment as they will be spoiling the spirit of the AUSTRALIAN team. Any comments made in any other language are to be considered as RACIALISM only.

(6) MATCH REFREE decisions will be taken purely on the AUSTRALIAN TEAM advices only. Player views from the other teams decisions will not be considered for hearing. MATCH REFREES are to be given huge bonus if this rule is implemented.

(7) NO VISITING TEAM should plan to win in AUSTRALIA. This is to ensure that the sportive spirit of CRICKET is maintained.

(8) THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE: If any bowler gets RICKY PONTING – “THE UNDISPUTED CRICKETER WITH INTEGTIRY IN THE GAME OF CRICKET” more than twice in a series, he will be banned for the REST OF THE SERIES. This is to ensure that the best batsman/Captain will be played to break records and create history in the game of CRICKET.

These rules will clarify better to the all the teams VISITING AUSTRALIA.

UN to US – ICC to Australia??? :)

NOTE: I am not the author of the above post, I got it forwarded from my friend. Dropping Dravid Unfair

Dravid Dropped

Shocking, I am disappointed….
If this is the way, people are going to be treated, then…what to say?

May be they could have called Rahul and conveyed or made him understand. Like how England and Australia cricket boards did for their senior players! I read in an article. I am a big fan of Sachin, but why this kind of thing never happend to Sachin when he was out of form?

We need to respect people who have proved and how have given their best. If we are unable to do that, then our civilization itself is in ?

I support Dravid and wish him all the best for the Ranji match against Mumbai on Nov 2 2007.

GET BACK RAHUL…we love you and we are behind you….always.

Point 1 : Stand in line

Sometimes I had a blame India, but this is for good…I love my country and love my language Tamil more than anything else. But there are areas in which we are weak; we should accept it….and correct it.

I would like to write a series of points which our education system fail to teach….yes, I know some of them are simple and doesn’t relate to education, but from my point of view, our education system should have taught us these.

One of the things I really get annoyed – when there is a crowd and no queue.

Why not all form a queue and gets what deserved, it can be availing a service or paying bills or taking a bus or lift? And the worse follows, even there is a queue; some of the so called well educated people try to escape the queue….come on.

Just think for a moment, if we throw some eatables, animals tend to bounce on it and try to get whatever possible, why people are behaving like that even after this soo many civilizations and education?

I have seen in other countries….wow, they are too good at this and we Indians do these stupid acts.
Why I am pointing to education system is, people with highest of qualifications also never bothered about queue and people who came first etc.

In fact, I had the worst experience, once I landed in Chennai air port, couple of flights landed within short time it seems and thanks to poor air port authorities, the number of trolleys were less…and what I witnessed was, one of the worst scenario… there was confusion, noise, arguments. I hope in India, the flying population is mainly the high class people and mostly well educated…and the flights landed all are from UK, Singapore…still!?

One thing I follow is to ensure that I stand in queue whenever possible and I hate to violate this rule. But I wonder how come our education never taught us this basic rule of civilization?? Or are we busy in building a BRAIN which works only in a programmed way?

My wish to the parents and teachers, please bring some value education apart from all these non-sense a square and b square…
Let us be honest to ourselves and take a oath that we would stand in by queue and make the country beautiful.

So next time when one of you friend or relative comes late after paying bill or anything because he/she waited for others to finish….DO NOT make fun of them, Appreciate them and try to follow them. It’s not how much you know is important, how much you present or behave yourself is important.

Part of the subject leads to my next post in this series “respecting others”.

Thank you.
